I have been putting 4 hours of input in during weekdays and 2 hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
My goal is to do a minimum of 20 hours a week. I started with just 2 hours everyday at the start of July. I’ve been mainly listening to Nihongo Con Teppei and Comprehensible Japanese.
I only had 70 hours logged on CIJ before but now I have 168 hours logged. I’m hoping by doing this that I can gain the ability to passively understand Japanese one day. Hoping to get to 1000 hours sometime next year

you can do it! the best part is the more you understand the easier it get to do more and more input hours, and remember if you have low motivation some days or so, listen to or watch the easier level videos, even i who sometimes watch “advanced” level videos have days where i only watch beginner/lower intermediate videos, just to see and remember how much i’ve learned and how for i have come!

I am now at 236 hours total listening time. I’m not tracking time spent reading but listening is the primary method I’m using right now for input.
I’m in the 900 episode range for Nihongo Con Teppei beginner podcast but I frequently relisten to his episodes. Recently I’ve started listening to the Teppei Noriko podcast too and I’m aiming to make that more of the bulk of my daytime listening. The beginner podcast was tough for me when I started but now it’s not bad and is mostly comprehensible. I’d gauge I understand about 90%+/- I felt bad about having troubles with it at first but Teppei has said multiple times in various episodes that the beginner podcast isnt really beginner and is more pre-intermediate.
The Teppei Noriko podcast is much tougher though. When I first listened to it, it was mostly gibberish to me. At least the overall meaning was. I would catch a lot of the words but the overall point of a sentence would take me a minute to process and boom next sentence from the other person. After about a week of putting some Teppei Noriko episodes into the mix, It’s not so bad now. Im going to relisten to some episodes as I start the day as a crutch and let the playlist continue into new content and repeat this process until it’s not so daunting. I am also working some of Teppei Z into the mix as well usually near the end of my 4 hour daily session.
I work manual labor so I’m blessed with the ability to do this. I’m also fortunate to have a Japanese copy of Animal Crossing for the 3ds. I had tried to play that before and because I can read a fair amount of kanji (and because the game uses furigana) I could force myself to read most of it but a lot of the nuance was lost on me. I happened to boot the game up today and I found that for some reason the Japanese just felt very natural and easy. Maybe it’s the similarity to Teppei’s manner of speech but I understood the puns when catching fish and Isabella at the start of the game. Like I said I’m not at this point primarily reading. I occasionally open Satori Reader and read but this came as somewhat of a shock to me.
Anyways here’s to 300 hours and what that brings. Maybe I’ll try one of those N4 listening tests on YouTube or something.
