I’m a little confused based on the level grading system of NIJ website. Specifically, what I am confused about is the number system. For the beginner videos, some are listed around the 30-60 range; there are also intermediate-level videos that are within the same number range. I know they are in separate categories, such as complete beginner, beginner, and intermediate, but with the number system, the numbers kind of make it seem like the difficulty overlaps between levels. The current range of video difficulty between levels is as follows:
Complete Beginner: 1-32
Beginner: 9-61
Intermediate: 36-93
Advanced: 62-100
Is the overlap in the numbers between levels where you are slowly pushing into the next level, or is it based on grammar points or the JLPT level of new grammar being spoken? If anyone can help me understand, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
If I remember correctly initially numbers are based not on actual video difficulty, but on metrics like vocabulary used, words per minute, video length. etc. This system doesn’t take into account how comprehensible video really is, or outright considers irrelevant parameters like video lengths which puts many super beginner easy, but long videos into much higher level. To fix this issue the system similar to DS was introduced, when user asked after each video if it was more or less comprehensible than the previous video. But looking at how the simplest Unpacking series is still placed at level 30 instead, the new system doesn’t seem to have properly worked.
Yes, I’ve noticed the grading system may or may not be functioning properly as well. Yoshito’s video game series Planet Lana, the first three episodes are all within the range of 27,28, and 29. However, Episode 4 is rated as a level 55 beginner yet it seemed to be using the same grammar and similarly consistent words. Though I may be wrong.
